Banff Writing Studio
Monday, May 31, 2010, 03:33 PM - Poetry and Writing

Come to the mountains with gorgeous trails, an incredible community of writers and artists, wine, openings, prepared food, unlimited desserts and see how dedicated you are to working on your manuscript. Seriously, I turned a few corners with "Reverb," my first book of poems in Banff. A truly magical place to write. Thank you NS Talent Trust and Banff Centre for the Arts Writing Studio. Next project is a jazz-poetry collaboration with a jazz musician/composer Chris Tarry who I met there and a Halifax jazz trio, Sanctuary. Stay tuned.

October in Saskatchewan

Such a gift to get the Wallace Stegner Residency and grant. One month of nothing but writing and sky.

Badlands

amber sloping lines
softened further by fog
emboldened by drift

Sagebrush

muted silver, rose
brimming from the edges
balls of vintage lace

Listen to some Poetry

Congrats to Randy Dover from Newfoundland! He won the national CBC poetry face-off. Nice to see that it has gone to a fellow maritimer.

I won for Halifax. Thanks to all of you who took the time to write me a note about the poem. That was the real flight for me.

Have a listen below...

Divine

Dragon flies in drag
over river spits,
mustard grasses,
tissue wings
zim hummering.
Their needled bodies
threaded beads, azure
hyphened by ebony
to the period of their
tails. Tumid eyes to tips
to eyes, waging circles
where another begins,
where mist and sigh,
early sky shaking its wings,
water below splitting,
spreading hemispheres
a slow spinning blue
mouths
consuming
tails
consuming
mouths.
