Aging well
- For me, fitness is about doing the things I love to do as long as I can- paddling, motorcycling, skiing, cycling etc.
- Here are some things I do for myself and recommend to personal training clients:
- Keep moving. Ensure some resistance training (we start to lose muscle mass and bone density after 35), cardio but mainly keep moving. Moving daily just by walking or errands is one of the most important things you can do for your health.
- Eat really well 80% of the time. That’s whole foods free of processing, added salt, sugars. The rest of the time, enjoy your treats.
- Get good rest. Between workouts and at night. As we get older, higher intensity exercise produces more cortisol. We need heart health & a bit of pushing intensity but we (and our joints) generally need more rest and recovery.
- Stay hydrated. Water but also herbal teas, lots of vegetables are other ways to get water.
- These are pretty standard but to them I would add:
- Have fun.
- Keep stress to a dull roar. See previous.
- Get outside regularly. Important for Vitamin D. But also circadian rhythm & sleep. Just discovered wild/cold ocean swimming & in love with the feeling. Surprising because I wasn’t even a shoulder-season swimmer before.
